adidas Expands Use of Materials Made from Ocean Waste

Adidas (Germany) will launch new fabrics made from recycled polyester and marine plastic waste. It will expand the product lines that use these recycled materials after the success of shoes made with the Parley for the Oceans initiative, the company said in a statement.

Adidas first teamed up with Parley in 2015 to make shoes using plastic collected on beaches and coastal regions. It produced around 11 million pairs in 2019, still only a tiny percent of the 400 million pairs of shoes adidas made last year.

Adidas will also launch “Primeblue” fabric containing Parley marine waste that it will use in existing lines like its Ultraboost shoes. In total, adidas will produce 15-20 million pairs of shoes using ocean plastic in 2020.
